In this, the second instalment covering sailplanes over the last 75 years, Martin deals with the period 1945-1965. Having first-hand experience of the era, martin looks at how this period saw great leaps in designs with the application of low drag aerodynamics and its affect on the structures and methods of construction.
Without a doubt, the war period had left a varied legacy through new innovation but also through a restriction and in some cases a banning of sailplane related activities. The business of sailplane design had been turned on its head with the shift in political and geographical boundaries, and new forces in sailplane design come to the forefront.
Martin describes his coverage of this period as an “attempt to account of the revolution in soaring by describing sailplanes that made their first flights in the twenty year period”.
He himself agrees that he was not able to cover all the significant sailplanes of the era, with his initial list of aircraft totalling 400 types (culled to 125). But to his credit, Martin seems to have a vast cross section of what was created during this inspiring time.
Following the standards set in the first book of this series, Martin has continued to provide wonderful images, and his drawings are still setting the standards. His incorporation of the new materials used in construction has been well reproduced and translated through them.
We congratulate Martin on continuing to produce such a wonderful resource that is sure to be a timeless legacy for sailplane enthusiasts.
