In the first of a series of three books, Martin Simons has outdone himself with the calibre of books he has written about the 1920 – 1945 period of sailplane development.
As a modeller myself, finding concise information about the history of gliding and the history of particular gliders has always been a challenge. A lot of the information is fragmented and difficult to find. With this book, Martin has not only provided a deep insight into the design of gliders from the 1920 - 1945 era, but also provided documentation on a level that has previously not existed in one place.
Spanning from the first Rhon meeting at the Wasserkuppe and the group of dubious gliders that entered that first meeting, through to covering sailplane designs from around the world up until 1945. This book has a close look at what inspired these designs and the developments that made this era such an exciting time for sailplane design.
There are many new photographs not previously seen published with some in colour but most in black and white (as the era provides). With each of the feature sailplanes, Martin has painstakingly drawn 3-view drawings that seem to be the best available. The level of detail in these drawings can be seen in the sample provided, and are drawn by Martin from many sources including original workshop plans, actual measurements and photographs. Undoubtedly, Martin has set the benchmark for 3-view drawings in this arena.
